In the Fall of 1976, Sister Barbara Popchak, VSC and Father Bernard Hrico began a Montessori pre-school program at St. Winifred’s Church in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. When the school opened its doors in September 1976, there were 25 students and 3 teachers.
The school was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1993.
In the ensuing 40 years, the student population has grown to over 180 students; the staff has expanded to 23.
The Academy was established in 1994 with ten elementary students. Today, the Academy’s classrooms and hallways are alive with the spirit and voices of 37 students and 4 team teachers.
Serving over 150 families, Mt. Lebanon Montessori School/Academy is the South Hill’s only non-sectarian elementary and pre school program.
The Peace Garden is a fitting tribute to Sister Barbara, a visionary leader who promoted world peace through outstanding cultural diversity. A woman who inspired respect for the environment by tending a vegetable garden every summer. A woman who renewed her strength during quiet afternoons sitting on a shady porch contemplating the colorful birds who visited her front yard bird bath.
Permanent features of the Peace Garden include a Peace Pole and a bench for contemplation.
